Taiwan!

Chicago Update-
After facing a monsoon, flash flood, and several traffic jams I finally arrived at DTW. Security wasn’t too bad and I got through in less than 10 minutes.
The flight to Chicago was intense to say the least. There was some serious turbulence, and I’m pretty sure the plane dropped a good 10 feet at one point. Despite the turbulence it was wonderful to start another adventure abroad. Once we broke through the clouds it was sunny and bright. I love flying through the fluffy white clouds because it makes you feel like you’re on the edge of the world.
We arrived on time to Chicago and had a nice (but expensive) lunch at Chili’s. We already boarded for our Tokyo flight, but then were asked to get off again due to some type of crew emergency. Comforting.
It looks like we are about to board again, an hour later than expected. Hopefully we don’t miss our connecting flight! I’ll try to update after the next 12 hours flight.

Taiwan Update-
Touch down! Our delay in Chicago gave me no time to update in Tokyo. We literally got off the plane and got on the next one. It was a long flight to Tokyo, but it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. It helped that I had a good book. The movie selection wasn’t too bad either with movies like RED, Tron, and even episodes of House!
I don’t know what I was expecting to find in Japan, but not much had changed since the last time I was there. Maybe a few more people wearing masks, but overall it seemed like any other airport.
I couldn’t believe how many little kids were on the Tokyo flight. Of course one little girl insisted on kicking the back of my seat for 10 of the 12 hours while her baby brother screamed most of the way. I see why they use screaming babies as a method of torture now…
I found it interesting that we had to go through a radiation scanner when we got to Taiwan. Customs was rather interesting as well since none of our group knew where we were staying. The customs people didn’t like that very much…lol.
It wasn’t hard to find our professor, and he had us in a car going to our hotel in no time. The hotel is nice! Too bad all our accommodations won’t be this nice the whole trip. The group (at least those who didn’t get stuck in Tokyo for the night), decided to grab some food before bed. We walked down to the 7-11. I found my favorite bread with chocolate cream that I had in Japan. It was just as good as I remembered! Then we went for about a mile walk to the nearest McDonalds. Healthy right?
Along the way we saw several prostitutes’ shops, which come to find out are not selling services but rather gum. Addictive chewing gum sold by ladies in underwear...humm? Also, they sell beer in street vending machines. I'm not in America any more!
Now we are back in the hotel settling in. Breakfast is from 6-9 tomorrow. There is a 12 hour time difference, so those of you at home just switch the AM for PM and you know what time it is here. I’d better go since people in the group have discovered I have Skype. Everyone wants to call home.
I’m excited to start exploring tomorrow. As much as I am looking forward to this trip I am also looking forward to getting home to pick up where I left off:) Its nice to have some things to look forward to when I get back!
