Brace yourself because this is going to be a shock; today was even more awesome than yesterday! I didn’t think it could get better, but I was definitely wrong! I started the day with the most delightful breakfast in the sea view diner. There was American food, fresh fruit, Taiwanese food that I like, banana bread, and even a guy making omelets. I got to enjoy these wonderful flavors while having a beautiful view of the ocean. Before our meeting time I went by one of the stores down stairs and got some cute new sandals and a new backpack since mine ripped.
Next the group gathered together and went for an ecology tour by the sea shore. I was expecting it to be boring, but I was wrong again! We got to catch starfish and have them crawl all over us. Then we got to hold another kind of starfish that was like a rock but if you waited it would start to move. Our tour guide also found a sea cucumber, which wasn’t so good for most of us since we had that for lunch the other day.
After a ten minute break to give us some time out of the super hot sun, we loaded onto our bus. The destination: the brightest lighthouse in Taiwan. Of course it was quite the uphill hike to get there, but we are getting used to walking all the time. It was a nice lighthouse, a lot like the ones we have in Michigan. The view from up there was amazing. Be sure and check out the photos on my Flickr page.
Lunch was back to some questionable food like snail, red fish, small fish salad, etc. At least we got to wash it down with carbonated apple juice-yum! One of the fish actually had teeth and eyes.
Now for the best part of the entire trip (I know it seems like I keep saying that)-Jeeps!! Our guide told us that we would take a jeep up the mountain. I thought that meant get in a jeep and go up the mountain…literally. However, the language barrier didn’t convey that it was EXTREME JEEPING! Best surprise ever! Standing in the back of the jeep as it raced around hairpin turns, jumped dirt mounds, and climbed hills that put us vertical was sweet! Check out a video that Sean took while in the jeep at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YkpsS9H6qk&feature=channel_video_title. I tried to climb to the top of one of the hills to get a picture to show everyone how big the jumps were. I almost made it to the top before I fell all the way back down (yes, my white shorts are no longer white). I was covered in dirt! It almost felt like being home at the barn!
We hit the beach on the way back to the resort. We only stayed for a bit because it was so crowded. I didn’t mind much since one side of my body was crispy burnt while the other was still snow white. Not sure how that happened.
Finally we had some time to enjoy the resort. Pat and I set off to find the pool, which was an adventure on its own. We had to buy swimming caps (apparently a rule in Taiwan for all pools) and try to find the pool we were looking for. There are about seven pools here so it was a quest. We found it, but it wasn’t just a pool. IT WAS A WATER SLIDE! Two of the actually. Pat and I had a great time racing each other. They were tall and fast and absolutely fun!
When we left there was just enough time for a shower and then the group bused over to Kenting Street for dinner. There were reservations for us at a famous Mexican restaurant. It was pretty good food and I was excited to get a general ale.
Arianna and I decided to go shopping along Kenting Street before the bus came. I bought (don’t faint!) a dress. This type of dress is very popular in Taiwan with a scrunchy top and floral print in shades of purple and pink. It matched my new shoes and new necklace (did I mention I bought more shiny things at the market by the lighthouse). I plan to wear them to our goodbye dinner on Saturday night. It’s hard to believe our trip is almost over. I fly out Sunday afternoon for China.
