Day 15

9:40 PM
The group has an air of sadness about them. One more day left of our study abroad. I guess the idiom ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ has been proven true. Even through everyone is disappointed that its over they are also kind of happy to be going home. I’m excited that I’m about to set out on my adventure through China! I can’t wait to climb the great wall and experience a new culture. It’s going to be weird to go a week without Facebook. How did we ever survive pre-Facebook?
Today our first stop was a factory tour of another beer company. I liked King Car Whiskey much better than this place. Perhaps the difference was that this was one company whereas King Car was an business empire. We had lunch at downstairs in the restaurant area. It was ok food, but nothing amazing. I was excited for the white rice! After lunch they were giving away beer for free. I skipped it and bought an ice cream instead. Little did I know it was made with yeast like the beer. It had an odd flavor, but it wasn’t bad.
Another long bus ride (there was a lot of traveling today-we have to cross the entire country by tomorrow) and we arrived at the Taiwanese Indigenous People’s Cultural Park. This was a pretty cool place. We had a welcome dance preformed for us where they even set of firecrackers. After the welcome dance we viewed a short video about the park. Then we loaded onto an open-air tour bus and drove up the mountain to this large performing area. There were tribes that preformed different types of dances. It was very cool to see except we were all too tired to enjoy it. Once we sat down and they started a steady rhythm on the drum and a chant I think everyone was fighting to keep their eyes open. While we were inside there was a massive rainfall. Thankfully, when we left our tour bus drove us back to our regular bus.
Onward to the bullet train! We had a ‘box lunch’ which consisted of a massive pork chop thing, rice, green things, tofu, and eggs. I would have gotten a picture but my battery finally died after three days without a charge. Another two hour trip and a shuttle van later, we are finally at the hotel for the night. Pat, Diane and I decided not to go out tonight so we went down to the Family Mart store for dinner. I got Cheetos, green tea ice cream and apple juice to go along with the PB&J we made. We decided that there are no calories in Taiwan-especially not so close to the end of our trip. Besides, I’m pretty sure my diet of white rice I have planned for the next week will negate the calorie count of tonight. I plan to use the rest of the night to research the metro in China, finalize airline times and figure out which airport I need to go to on Sunday (Saturday in US time). Hopefully I will be able to Skype home tonight. Goodnight!
